Choose the settings you want and click “OK.” The spectrogram will now appear in the main window. Next, select the Sound object and go to View > Spectrogram Settings. Choose the file you want to analyze and click “Open.” The file will now appear in the Objects list. A dialog box will appear asking you to select a file. To use Praat for acoustic analysis, first open the program and create a new Sound object. It can be used to analyze the acoustic properties of speech, to create visual representations of speech sounds, and to measure the duration and pitch of speech sounds. Praat is a computer program that is used by linguists to study the sounds of language. This is the presentation on Praat scripting and the basics that I gave during the 2017 LSA Minicourse. Praat is available for free for a variety of platforms, including Windows, macOS, and Linux. Praat is used by linguists, phoneticians, speech therapists, speech pathologists, and audiologists for a variety of purposes, including speech perception, speech production, acoustic analysis, and phonetic transcription. The name is derived from the Dutch word for “talk”. It has been designed and developed by Paul Boersma and David Weenink of the University of Amsterdam. Praat is a program for the analysis of phonetic data, primarily speech.
